Lensing properties of 7 damped Lyα absorbing galaxy-QSO pairs

چکیده
Le Brun et al. (1997) presented the first identifications of the galaxies giving rise to 7 intermediate redshift damped Lyα (DLA) absorption systems. Here, we study the gravitational lensing properties of these foreground galaxies based on their observed optical appearance and on the absence of any secondary lensed quasar image. We consider the possibility that any secondary image be hidden due to extinction by dust, but find it unlikely. We derive upper limits on the amplification factor affecting the luminosity of the background quasars; in each case, this factor is found to be less than 0.3 mag. We also obtain upper limits on the total mass of the damped Lyα galaxies, within radii equal to the quasar impact parameters. Mass-to-light ratios are found to be consistent with existing estimates based on X-ray emission or on motion of dwarf satellites. Although we show that lensing is not important in this sample, we note that existing DLA surveys used to determine the cosmological density of gas at z < 1 are based on samples of quasars brighter than the ones considered here and for which the amplification bias is likely to be stronger.

The NATURE OF DAMPED Lyα ABSORBING GALAXIES AT z ≤ 1–A PHOTOMETRIC REDSHIFT SURVEY OF DAMPED Lyα ABSORBERS
We study the nature of damped Lyα absorption (DLA) systems at z ≤ 1 using a sample of 11 DLA galaxies, for which accurate redshift measurements are available. Five of the 11 systems are identified in our on-going photometric redshift survey of DLA galaxies, while the remaining six systems are identified by previous groups using either spectroscopic or photometric redshift techniques. Absolute B...
متن کاملEmission Line Spectroscopy of a Damped Lyα Absorbing Galaxy at Z = 0.437
We present Keck/LRIS spectra of a candidate damped Lyα (DLA) galaxy toward the QSO 3C196 (zem = 0.871). The DLA absorption system has a redshift of zDLA = 0.437, and a galaxy at 1.5 ′′ from the QSO has been identified in high resolution imaging with WFPC2/HST. We have detected emission lines of [O II] λ3727, Hβ, [O III] λ5007, Hα and [N II] λ6584 at the absorption redshift. Based on the emissio...
متن کاملGALAXIES ASSOCIATED WITH Z ∼ 4 DAMPED Lyα SYSTEMS I. IMAGING AND PHOTOMETRIC SELECTION
This paper describes the acquisition and analysis of imaging data for the identification of galaxies associated with z ∼ 4 damped Lyα systems. We present deep BRI images of three fields known to contain four z ∼ 4 damped systems. We discuss the reduction and calibration of the data, detail the color criteria used to identify z ∼ 4 galaxies, and present a photometric redshift analysis to complem...
متن کامل0 Lost and Found : The Damped Lyman Alpha Absorbers in the QSO OI 363 1 Judith
The galaxy giving rise to the damped Lyα absorbing system in the QSO OI 363 with z = 0.221 has been found. A galaxy which is probably associated with the second DLA in this same QSO at z = 0.0912 has also been found. Neither galaxy is very luminous, and neither galaxy shows signs of extensive current star formation, a massive disk or lots of gas. The impact parameters for each of the two galaxi...
متن کاملDAMPED Lyα ABSORBER AND THE FAINT END OF THE GALAXY LUMINOSITY FUNCTION AT HIGH REDSHIFT
We combine predictions for several hierarchical cosmogonies with observational evidence on damped Lyα systems to establish a correspondence between the high redshift galaxy population and the properties of damped Lyα systems (DLAS). We assume that high redshift galaxies and damped Lyα systems are hosted by the same dark matter halos and require consistency between the predicted halo space densi...
